Review of the Caliburn EVO Points - Starter Kit
Caliburn EVO Starter Kit - Replacement Dart Point System.
Difficulty installing 1.5 (easy)
Let me say from the outset the trick to success in any DIY is
- Preparation
- Read the instructions
The kit arrives in a small box that contains:
1 x Instruction booklet -Read it!
3 x plain 32mm points
1 x insertion tool/depth gauge
3 x sets of spigots
1 x point tightening wrench
The only thing you need to have to install your Caliburn EVO points is a standard repointing tool, I used my ever-reliable Deadeye Repointer.
I started by removing the points from the darts and cleaning them.
Following the instructions, I checked the point hole depth using the gauge on the reverse side of the spigot insertion tool. All the point holes were sufficiently deep according to the mark on the depth gauge.
The spigots come in cute little containers 3 x 2.33mm, 3 x 2.34mm, and 3 x 2.35mm starting with the smallest size, screw one into the insertion tool, and try to put it into the point hole of the barrels one at a time.
Dart points are a light interference press fit into any dart barrel (except Swiss points).
It’s best if the spigot stops short of going into the hole.
Once you have the correct spigot size, mount the insertion tool in the re-pointer and press the spigot into the dart barrel until the insertion tool bottoms out fully. Remove the tool and barrel, screw the Caliburn points onto the spigot, and tighten it with the provided. Repeat the process for the other two barrels, and you’ll be done in no time. It took me a total of 15 minutes from start to throwing them.
The Verdict
The process of installation is simple and clean.
There is a temptation to rush through but as the saying goes “slow and steady wins the race” Do it right the first time.
In my opinion, the conversion is best performed on a set of darts that have not had multiple-point changes previously. The variation in point hole drilling across different manufacturers may be problematic.
The temptation is there to over-tighten the newly installed points, but adopting a gentle nip-up is sufficient.
I installed the Caliburn points in a set of Custom-made darts I had made years ago that had a set of 36mm Target Diamond points installed as I said it was a walk in the park. I played with them for around an hour practicing, they didn’t move in the slightest.
An alternative to buying a set of Swiss point darts and as these become more popular the range of point styles will grow.
I like the idea of an economic alternative to standard points, and to buying a set of Swiss Point darts 5.0/5.0.
